It was a sure bet that this modern classic holiday movie, now celebrating its 20th anniversary, was due to see some kind of merchandise tie-in along with the 2 DVD special edition that was recently released. For those not in the know, A Christmas Story is a humorous tale based on Jean Shepherd's In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash, about a boy growing up in the 1940s who's trying to get the all-famous Red Ryder B.B. Gun for Christmas. While my description of the premise may not do it justice, the story is told with great humor and a heavy dose of nostalgia.

Neca Reel Toys have created a series of merchandise for those interested. First and foremost is the toy line of action figures, which includes Ralphie with a bar of soap and B.B. Gun, the Old Man with Leg Lamp, Mom and Randy in his bundle of clothes, and Flick stuck with his tongue frozen to a pole. While most of these figures have limited degrees of poseability, they do have a great attention to detail. In fact, you'll probably quite impressed with how good the figures look, especially Ralphie and the Old Man, who look like dead ringers for the actors.

Along with the toys are a number of related merchandise, including a lunchbox, with thermos, Christmas ornaments, bobbleheads of the Old Man and Ralphie and a string of Christmas lights shaped like the leg lamp. And if, you want to really go all out with the Leg Lamp, in its required glory as an icon of depravity, there are 40" and 20" statuettes of the product. Add a 10" Ralphie and 12" Old Man that come with sound features and just about every fan of the movie can find something to collect. Both of the larger figures are just resized versions of the smaller figures but with a little more detail. Maybe, if fans are lucky, the product will sell enough to get Neca Reel Toys to make some more figures, like Schwartz, Grover Gill, Scut Farkus and Santa Claus.

For those who revel in watching A Christmas Story, like my own father, who watches it multiple times a year, these collectibles are worth hunting down and paying good money for. Make no mistake - the figures are not intended for play, though I think they're sturdy enough to handle it. This series is definitely for the fans and I give Neca a lot of credit for doing it right.
